Still soaked in the sweat and swagger of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Jaguar bring us “Contra La Corriente” (“Against the Current”), a modern cumbia chili-peppered with subtle influences from global bass and minimal post-disco. Raúl Parra’s haunted chants come and go in the song, often disappearing into the mélange of music as this cumbia builds its way through a multitude of layers. A call-and-response takes place between Parra’s vocals and the bounce-back of clarinet in reply. He sings that he is “against the current in my destiny, in my path... I go with you”.

Jaguar are the Colombian duo of Paulo and Raúl. On their debut album Madremonte they give voice to the everyday carnival of Colombia’s Caribbean coast; it’s a carnival that’s occult, sagacious, fleet of foot, mixing zouk, cumbia, salsa, bolero and champeta, to name but a few influences. In the hands of Jaguar, who bring years of music-making experience with them, they infuse these sounds lovingly with the production and precise rhythms of disco, funk and even a dash of minimal house. On “Contra La Corriente” they are joined by young multi-instrumentalist Sebastián.

As is becoming their style Jaguar take traditional Colombian rhythms but offer something far more contemporary, demonstrating how you can be faithful to customs of yore without standing still. It is not an easy task but one that Jaguar pull off, staying true to their roots, while adding in a spice of the sounds of now, and in the process revamping Colombian dance music for a new audience.
